      What is a COVID-19 IgM/IgG Rapid test?
The COVID-19 IgM/IgG Rapid test requires a drop of blood (usually a finger prick to draw) and is conducted at point-of-care. It detects the presence of IgM and/or IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV2. Your immune system creates antibodies (complex protein structures) to fight infection. Once you have become exposed to a virus, your body will create different types of immunoglobulins that target that specific virus. These are called IgM (early antibodies, non-specific) and IgG (produced later, and much more specific antibodies). The COVID-19 IgM/IgG Rapid test detects the presence of your antibodies (IgM and/or IgG) against the COVID-19 virus. It is important to note that your body may not start producing antibodies until several days after initial infection as per the graph below, currently considered timelines. FOR USE: Negative results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in those who have been in contact with the virus. Follow-up testing with a molecular diagnostic should be considered to rule out infection. Results from antibody testing should not be used as the sole basis to diagnose or exclude SARS-CoV-2 infection or to inform infection status. COVID-19 IgM/IgG Rapid Testing Kits are TGA approved – ARTG# 334501.
